SUMMARY:Beyond Energy: Using Passive House Standards To Boost Resilience Of California’s Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:Register \nThe State of California has ambitious goals to decarbonize its economy in the near future. However\, when it comes to building efficiency\, even the latest version of Title 24 focuses on mechanical systems and renewable energy sources rather than prioritizing the quality of the buildings themselves. \nThis presentation illustrates the advantages of adopting Passive House standards for building and renovating structures in a resilient and energy-efficient manner\, even in California’s mild climate conditions. \nCase studies are used to demonstrate the balancing act involved in decisions such as determining insulation levels\, selecting coatings for glass to balance daylight transmission and solar heat control\, and addressing other aspects critical to creating healthy\, comfortable\, and durable buildings.” \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nCompare Passive House standards with Title 24 and understand the key differences between these standards.\nIdentify strategies and project aspects that enhance the resilience of buildings.\nReview case studies specific to California\, and evaluate strategies based on project goals and constraints.\nEvaluate the use of the Passive House performance-based approach to support projects that may not necessarily pursue green building certification.\n\n  \n1 AIA|LU available for this course \n  \nInstructor: \nEnrico Bonilauri\, Emu Passive \nEnrico holds two Masters Degrees — one in Architecture from the University of Parma\, Italy\, and one in Sustainable Design from the University of Sydney\, Australia. As a registered Italian Architect and Certified Passive House Trainer\, Designer\, and PHI Certifier\, he has worked in Australia\, Europe\, and North America. He specializes in building envelope analysis\, informed by the thousands of hours spent on construction sites. Speaker experience includes conferences in Germany\, Austria\, China\, US\, Canada\, Spain\, Australia\, and New Zealand. He’s the Co-Founder of Emu and has been the scientific curator of their Passive House training curriculum\, teaching American builders since 2017. He became Emu’s CEO in 2024. \n
