SUMMARY:Flexible Dates: Become a HERS Rater
DESCRIPTION:INTEREST FORM\n\n3C-REN has partnered with CalCERTS\, Inc. to offer HERS (Home Energy Rating System) Rater training for FREE* to qualified candidates across the tri-counties!   \nAs the California Energy Code (Title 24 Part 6) becomes more stringent\, HERS Raters are essential to the construction process as trusted third-party reviewers of the performance of a building’s major energy-using appliances.   \nCandidates will learn to conduct the following tests to verify the performance of various building systems:  \n\nDuct Tests \nBlower Door Tests \nQuality Insulation Installation (QII) \nFan Efficacy/Watt Draw \nRefrigerant Charge Verification \nSolar System Verification \nAnd more! \n\nHERS certification has several tracts depending on the individual’s focus. Pathways include:  \n\nHERS Residential Alterations \nHERS New Construction \nHERS Solar \nHERS II – Whole House Rater + CA RESNET \nHERS Nonresidential  \n\nA high school diploma or GED is recommended for enrolling in this training opportunity. For more information about what a HERS Rater does\, visit WWW.CALCERTS.COM to find a detailed course listing\, definitions\, resources\, job qualifications\, and more.   \nTo sign up for this training fill out the interest form. 3C-REN staff will follow up to schedule a short discussion about your experience and career trajectory.  \n*3C-REN will fully pay for training in partnership with CalCERTS\, Inc. Candidates will be responsible for any field house and EPA 608 examination fees\, which typically range from $200 to $325. Exams include: HERS Residential Alterations Compliance Fieldhouse and EPA 608 Universal Certification Core and Type II. These exams are required to become a HERS Rater in California and to handle refrigerants (EPA 608). In addition\, 3C-REN will require candidates to complete a brief bi-annual survey for one year\, detailing their experience after the class.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Passive House 4-hr
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nPassive House goals and methodology change the way architects and builders think and work\, making the architectural design itself a driver of climate\, health\, and social solutions. This is a 4-hour course that dives into the basic principles\, history\, certification\, and the new frontiers of Passive House design as it continues to challenge and change industry expectations. All theory is then illustrated through 3 case studies outlining specific Passive House principles. \nPrerequisite Knowledge\nGeneral knowledge about sustainable building design. \nLearning Objectives \n\nOutline the 5 basic principles of Passive House design and how each principle contributes to the health\, safety and welfare of occupants.\nDescribe why and how hygienic ventilation is an essential defining component of Passive House design and operation. And outline how the Passive House design focuses on very good energy efficiency which results in side-benefits like great occupant thermal and acoustic comfort\, improved occupant health outcomes\, and economic affordability.\nOutline the major Passive House tools: PHPP\, DesignPH and Therm\, and provide an overview of the tools in correlation with data-driven design.\nTo understand how to get from where the participant is now to building a building adhering to the international passive house standard through applicable case studies. And illustrate the data-driven’ design process used to help projects meet their comfort\, durability and climate goals.\n\nLearning Units \n4.0 AIA LU/HSW approved for this course \nInstructor \nSteve Mann\, The Passive House Network and Home Energy Services

SUMMARY:Crafting High Performance Enclosures: Roofs\, Walls\, and Floors – Class 3 High Performance Fundamentals Series
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThis is class 3 of 6 in 3C-REN’s High Performance Fundamentals Certificate series. Earn a 3C-REN certificate of completion after finishing the series and passing short quizzes at the end of each class. This series will be hosted twice throughout 2023.  \n  \nBuilding enclosures – the roof\, walls\, and floor – are the first line of defense between nature and people. Enclosure performance is optimized when air sealing and insulation – two under appreciated and typically underperforming features – are done to high-performance standards rather than the status quo. The preceding class in our High Performance Fundamentals program (How Buildings Work; Science and Buildings and Science in Buildings) covered the scientific principles needed to effectively design high-performance buildings. This class covers installation — the practical application of those principles on the job site – the hands-on activities that differentiate ‘business-as-usual’ from high-performance construction. These include best practices for air sealing\, insulation installation\, and window installation\, along with the tools and methods (e.g.\, blower door testing) used to measure the quality of work\, and the metrics against which the work can be evaluated.   \n  \nLearning Objectives  \nAfter attending this class\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDescribe preferred methods and materials used for air sealing different types of building openings\, and how to test the results; \nExplain the difference between conventional insulation practices and “Quality Insulation Installation (QII)” methods\, and how QII is verified; \nIdentify five common building enclosure installation flaws and how to avoid them.  \nQuantify the magnitude of the gap between minimum energy code compliance and high performance\, where all energy features are confirmed with building performance test methods. \n\n2 AIA LU|HSW available for this course \nInstructor: \nJudy Rachel\, Home Performance Pro \nInstructors: \n\nJudy Rachel\, Home Performance Pro

SUMMARY:Water Heating Distribution Best Practices – Class 4: High Performance Fundamentals Series
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThis is class 4 of 6 in 3C-REN’s High Performance Fundamentals Certificate series. Earn a 3C-REN certificate of completion after finishing the series and passing short quizzes at the end of each class. This series will be hosted twice throughout 2023.  \n  \nDo you have any customers who wait a long time to get hot water somewhere in their house? Do you know someone who is frustrated watching the water run down the drain while waiting when outdoor watering is restricted due to drought? Have you ever wondered why a shower sometimes feels wimpy and what you can do about it without adding a boost pump? And\, given the trend toward decarbonization\, how do you pick a water heater that will provide customer satisfaction and be energy efficient? Would you like to know how to solve these and related problems in existing buildings and prevent them in new ones?  We will discuss the answers to these and other questions during this fast-paced class.   \n  \nLearning Objectives  \n  \nAfter attending this class\, participants will be able to:  \n\nIdentify the causes underlying occupants’ number one hot water complaint (it takes too long for hot water to get from a water heater to fixtures) and what can be done to fix the problem in existing homes and prevent it in new ones.  \nDescribe the value of the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator to right-size the plumbing in single-family and multifamily dwellings. \nAssist homeowners in selecting replacement water heaters that will meet their household needs as well as State climate goals. \nSummarize the variables that need to be evaluated when replacing an existing non-heat pump water heater with a heat pump model. \n\n2 AIA LU’s available for this course \nInstructor: \nGary Klein\, Gary Klein & Associates
