Sustainability Division Volunteers with Food Share

At the County of Ventura’s Sustainability Division, our mission extends beyond environmental stewardship; it encompasses fostering a resilient and thriving community for all. In alignment with this commitment, our team has initiated a quarterly volunteer program with Food Share of Ventura County, dedicating our time to pack produce and supply boxes for families in need.

Food Share’s Role in Community Sustainability

Food Share is Ventura County’s largest hunger-relief organization, serving approximately 267,000 food-insecure individuals annually. Their programs not only address immediate nutritional needs but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of our community by:

  • Reducing Food Waste: Through initiatives like the Food Waste Prevention and Rescue Grant Program, Food Share has diverted over two and a half million pounds of food from landfills, transforming potential waste into valuable resources for those in need. This effort plays a key role in fighting climate change: when food ends up in landfills, it decomposes and emits methane — a greenhouse gas that is more than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. Project Drawdown identifies reducing food waste as one of the most impactful climate solutions available.
  • Supporting Vulnerable Populations: Programs such as the Senior Food Box provide monthly, nutritious food packages to low-income seniors, enhancing their health and well-being.
  • Educating Future Generations: The Kids’ Farmers’ Market offers a hands-on approach to improving children’s diets, fostering healthier eating habits that can last a lifetime.

Aligning Efforts for a Sustainable Future

Our collaboration with Food Share reflects the interconnectedness of social equity and environmental sustainability. By volunteering, we actively participate in:

  • Building Community Resilience: Addressing food insecurity strengthens the social fabric of Ventura County, ensuring all residents have the resources they need to thrive.
  • Promoting Sustainable Practices: Supporting food distribution programs that prioritize waste reduction aligns with our goals of minimizing environmental impact and promoting resource efficiency.

We are proud to support Food Share’s mission and encourage others to join us in making a tangible difference in our community. Together, we can nourish hope and build a more sustainable Ventura County.
